Ok, i’m pretty sure that 90% of you will say it is bad.
To me, it’s good AND bad, depends on how you see it (gosh, i do sound like someone working in a consulting firm).
If you haven’t read my previous post on Family vs Work, do take few minutes to read. I find the post very meaningful (ok…now i’m back to the old Alvin Lim).
I just came back from dinner with few senior colleagues and they talked about our ex-colleague being workacholic. This ex-colleague (let’s name the person ABC – not air batu campur…or…er..in English is mixed ice?) of ours was quite an extreme person who has nothing in his mind but work, work and work. He is the type of person who will go back to office and work after dinner or during weekends. The type of person who always get his ideas at weird hours….3am. The bad thing is, well, he’ll call you up excitedly and let you know about his ideas!
Gosh, i’m fortunate that my boss is a family man.
To be honest, I myself can be quite a workacholic. I can work very long hours but my style is not the typical 9-5. I like to take short breaks in between….maybe to play games or watch animation or read comic or sleep. After that, i’ll continue to work. That’s my style and if i am working on something i am passionate about ….i can really work for long long hours.
But that’s just me and my own world. I am sane enough to know that i shouldn’t call up someone at 3am just to shout out my ideas to him. Work life balance…this is important.
I believe if you do have some “life” ….be it in between your working time (like my preferred style) or after your work, it is good enough. Don’t be overly absorbed in your work.
Some companies (especially chinaman styled companies) actually like to hire workacholics. They hire you to do more work for the same (or lesser) pay as the rest of the applicants. Isn’t that better?
But these companies should also realize that a workacholic might cause other problems such as poor work performance (long hours will make you tired, regardless of whether you are batman, spiderman or superman), unhappy subordinates (don’t think you want your boss to call you at 2am right? or a boss who penalizes you for working lesser amount of time than he does), etc.
For me, work is important but your life is more important. After you retired, what is left? Your spouse and maybe your family…but it is definitely not your work, and not the company who you’ve worked so hard for. When you are sick, who will be there for you (besides the doctors)? Not your ex-bosses but your family and friends.
Life is more than just work, work and work.

hahahaa… i have not come back here in a while.. have to catch up with your blog.
we modern slaves are trying to break free of our work shackles.
i believe in balance. didn’t you get my messages about asking you to go to sleep early even when we were rushing work??
my ex-CEO was a workaholic… 100x worse than i was. he used to wake up at 4am, call up his partner and start
rantingtalking away about something. however, he made up the balance by taking a long break from time to time just to refresh himself.we are humans, made of flesh and bone, not metal. in fact, i think metal rusts too…

yea, only machines/robots can work for long period of time and even them need some ‘break’ to cool down…else they will overheat and break down.

U are very wrong on this : “When you are sick, who will be there for you (besides the doctors)?”.
It is the nurses ! not doc be there for you, my friend !!!
:):).
I have a German friend who graduated from UF (University of Florida), he was posted to H.K as a CEO of a German firm. He was here for a short holiday recently, he said H.K people work like there is no tomorrow. I said I knew exactly what he was talking about. When I was in H.K, I had never come home from work before 12 mid night, always took the last MTR home. Now with over 25years of working experience (yes I started very young, all kind of works, kitchen hand, waitress, factory hand, IT tech works, IT management work, own my own business , stock brokers, Politician ‘machai’, now investor etc…
I looked back at my life and I can write a book on
a. 1000 things I wish I knew when I first started my career.
b. 5 steps you need to take to work to have US$1million in your retirement account at age 55.
I look at people around me, these are the factors that make a person to be workaholic or non-workaholic :
1. Our parents influence.
2. Our environment
3. What matter most to us : our values system.
4. Our career path – situation we are in and people who we met (heard of the saying, met the right person at the right time).
Agree ?

Jamy,
In Malaysia, it is the doctor not the nurse unless you go to the hospital
the nurses are the scary looking people who will b very helpful when the doctors said “body check”. =_= happened to my frens.
yeap, i do agree with you on the factors. if you live with ppl who are workacholics…or your entire family always stay up late at work…then u’ll most likely be influenced by them.
also, it depends on wat you treasure most. some ppl treat work/career as the first priority, some dont. watever is ur decision, jz make sure u wont regret it 10 or 20 years down the road.
it’s funny actually…tat sometimes, we hv companies who promote work n life balance. they ask u to go back early to accompany ur family….BUT, the workload is so much tat ur ‘nice boss’ is forced to hand them to u at 5.30 and tell u to finish it by today
sounds familiar? haha

errr.. in m’sia… the docs are not there for us. my friend who was in the hospital recently said that the nurses were there for her.
anyway, i digress (as usual).
beware of companies which stipulate work/life balance. they may say it but not mean it. work is work but if your boss does not recognize the need for rest, even tho he is harping on work/life balance, that means he’s all tok only.
i’m a natural workaholic. not so much influenced by my parents, it is just something i’m born with. friends asked me why i work so hard. i’m not sure why but come a couple of years back, i had to sit back and evaluate my work/life balance as it was affecting my health.
as usual, i harped on work/life balance with my team members but i end up doing all the hard work while they relaxed. i’m too much of a nice boss. lol!!
